Guide To Fall In Mystic – Something for All Ages

Fall is one of the most beautiful times of the year in New England, and Mystic, Connecticut is the perfect place to take advantage of all the fall activities you have waited for all summer. While thousands will flock to the area in search of vibrant fall foliage, there are so many other ways to celebrate fall. Follow along as we cover the can’t miss fall activities in Mystic.

Apple Picking & Cider Drinking

Apple picking in the Mystic area is a favorite fall pastime, and where there’s apples, there’s cider! There are plenty of orchards in and around town, and many offer more fall activities like corn mazes and hayrides.

B.F. Clyde’s Cider Mill

Not only is B.F. Clyde’s Cider Mill known for making some of the best sweet cider around, it is also the oldest steam-powered cider mill in the U.S and a National Historic Landmark. From September to December, visitors can enjoy cider-making demonstrations, taste sweet cider and enjoy old-fashioned cider donuts and other delicious baked goods. Adults can also indulge in a wine and hard cider tasting or take some to-go. Located just 5 minutes from downtown Mystic, B.F. Clyde’s Cider Mill is a staple for locals and travelers alike.

Holmberg Orchards

Roll up your sleeves! It’s time for a premier apple picking experience just 20 minutes north of downtown Mystic. At this family farm, apples can be picked everyday in September and October. If you head to Holmberg Orchards on a Saturday or Sunday, you can also enjoy cinnamon sugar donuts and cider slushies along with tractor rides and a corn maze. Pop into the Farm Market to stock up on fruits, veggies, baked goods and local specialty foods. If you’re looking for some adult fun, pull up a seat at the Wine & Cider Barn to enjoy a flight or glass as you take in the beautiful orchard views.

Pumpkin Patches

Nothing says fall quite like a pumpkin patch. Whether you're looking for the perfect carving pumpkin or simply craving a day out in the cool fall weather, these pumpkin patches won’t disappoint. And you don’t have to be a child to enjoy pumpkin carving!

Whittle’s Willow Spring Farm

During the month of October, pick out your favorite pumpkin in the adorable harvest patch at Whittle’s Willow Spring Farm. Just a quick 6 minutes from downtown Mystic, this scenic little farm and orchard is a great backdrop for photos. Pose in front of a giant pumpkin, a tractor, hay stacks and piglets. Yes...we said piglets!

Buttonwood Farm

Buttonwood Farm is all about family fun! On weekends from late September through October, get lost in a 7 acre corn maze, search for the perfect pumpkin in a 3 acre pumpkin patch and climb up straw bale mountain. Top off your fall fun with premium ice cream (yum!) made on the farm. Choose from more than 50 traditional and unique flavors in daily-made waffle cones and topped with real whipped cream.

Leaf Peeping

If you’re visiting Mystic in the fall, you won’t have to go far to see an array of yellow, red and orange leaves. Plan the perfect leaf peeping outing by checking Connecticut’s fall foliage report to find peak days. While you can see the changing leaves all around, here are two of our favorite places to take in the sights of fall.

Bluff Point State Park

Bluff Point State Park is a popular walking, mountain biking and picnic area located just outside of Mystic. This dog-friendly park is packed with amazing views of the Long Island Sound, wooded and coastal trails and a sandy beach.

Denison Pequotsepos Nature Center

Denison Pequotsepos Nature Center is a wildlife sanctuary with 10 miles of hiking trails to explore. You’ll find woodland, wetland and meadow views as well as an array of animals including painted turtles, bullfrogs, owls, hawks and falcons.

The Best Icy Treats Within Walking Distance Of Our Mystic Vacation Rental

Imagine summertime. Splashing around on the beach. Feeling the sunshine on your face. Taking that first bite of an icy treat on a hot day. Well, you’re in luck! We tracked down the best icy treats that Mystic has to offer, from family-friendly delights to a couple of adult-friendly options. And the best part is they are all within walking distance from our Mystic vacation rental.

  1. Mystic Drawbridge Ice Cream is a staple in downtown Mystic. Chock full of dozens of ice cream flavors organized into fun categories like the classics, nutty ones, non-dairy, fruity ones, and drawbridge originals, there is something for everyone. While you can’t go wrong with any of the flavors, our favorite icy treat is the sorbet freeze. A delightful pairing of their hand-mixed sorbet and your choice of fresh juice offers a non-dairy and refreshing treat. Our favorite is black raspberry sorbet with pineapple juice.

  2. Sea Swirl is a favorite among locals and tourists. If you want to act like a local, go for the soft serve. It comes in chocolate, vanilla, or twist, and do yourself a favor and add some cherry dips. If you’re a bit more on the adventurous side, choose from their extensive menu of sundaes, flurries, shakes, and floats.

  3. Mystic Sweet Shop’s claim to fame is that they have been making Mystic’s Best Fudge since 1997, and they aren’t wrong. The best way to fully experience all Mystic Sweet Shop has to offer is to go all handmade. Get a scoop of their handmade Seagull Tracks ice cream - a vanilla base with fudge swirl and mini peanut butter cups with homemade pistachio paste - in their handmade waffle cone. It’s sweet, it’s crunchy and it’s made with love.

  4. For those looking for a treat without the guilt, Karma Kitchen & Juicery has you covered. Known for their ultra-nutritions fresh fruit and green smoothies and juices, you will stay nourished and hydrated with this icy treat. The TropiKale Green Smoothie Bowl is a deliciously healthy mix of mango, banana and organic kale blended in a choice of almond milk or organic apple juice, then topped with banana, layered organic granola, sliced almonds, hemp seeds, and spirulina.

  5. While Sift Bake Shop is known for its French-focused artisanal breads, breakfast pastries, and sweet and savory delights and coffee drinks, you will be pleasantly surprised by the icy treats you can find at their rooftop bar, Mix. Pair the views and nice weather with the delicious and unique Pineapple Express. Made with habanero tantaeo and pineapple juice poured over a vanilla bean popsicle with a chili-lime rim. The sweet and spicy combination is not one you will be able to forget.

  6. Tio Juan’s Margaritas pairs margaritas inspired by the welcoming villages of central Mexico with amazing food built on centuries-old traditions. If you want to pretend you’re on the breezy beaches of Mexico, order the Lime in the Coconut margarita. Request it frozen to make the flavors of tequila, lime, and coconut even more hypnotizing.

Not-So-Touristy Sites To See During Your Weekend in Mystic, CT

One of the best parts of vacation is being able to be a tourist. Exploring a new place, visiting the sites and figuring out why people come to this location. While there are many popular attractions that draw people to a stay in Mystic and Connecticut as a whole, there are even more hidden and obscure attractions that are off the beaten path. If you are looking for some of the more not-so-touristy attractions, we have you covered. We have compiled a list of cool and unusual things to do near Mystic that are guaranteed to make your trip memorable.

  1. Zaffis Museum of the Paranormal
If you have an interest in the paranormal, the Zaffis Museum of the Paranormal is for you. Located about an hour outside of Mystic in Stratford, Connecticut, this museum was created by John Zaffis, the nephew of paranormal investigators, Ed and Lorrain Warren. John has collected artifacts said to be connected to paranormal activity from all over the world. You will see a sword potentially tied to satanic rituals, puppets and statues claimed to be connected to spiritual activity, and so much more.

    Location
    : Stratford, Connecticut
Visiting Information: Visits are by appointment only and can be made by visiting their website.
  2. Crypt at Center Church-on-the-Green
About 50 minutes west of Mystic, is a beautiful church in New Haven. Under that church sits a crypt with 137 gravestones (and potentially 1,000 unmarked remains) dating back from 1687 to 1812. Some of New England’s earliest residents are buried here including a founder of Yale College and Benedict Arnold’s first wife. Church employees offer tours of the crypt ensuring an interesting and educational experience.

Location: 250 Temple St, New Haven, CT 06511
Visiting Information: Tours times vary, visit their website to plan accordingly.

  3. Talcott Basalt Lava Pillows
What’s more unlikely: visiting a Target and getting a glimpse of Earth’s ancient past, or that New England was once volcanically active? In Meriden, Connecticut both are true. Just behind a Target store in Meriden, you can see magnificent Talcott Basalt Lava Pillows. Created in the early Mesozoic Era, when lava rose up through fissures in the earth into a lake. The outside of the lava quickly cooled when it made contact with the water, but the molten rock inside created a pillow-like feature that eventually hardened into basalt.

    Location
    : 474 Chamberlain Hwy, Meriden, Connecticut, 06451
Visiting Information: Park in the Target parking lot and walk around to the back of the building. Look to the southern end of the rock-cut for the best views.

  4. Nike Missile Site HA-26
During the Cold War, Connecticut was home to 12 Nike Missile sites designed to protect the U.S. from Russia. About an hour northwest from Mystic, the Meshomasic State Forest is home to the HA-26 site that was in operation from 1956 to 1963.

    Location
    : Glastonbury, Connecticut

    Location
: Connecticut Science Center in Hartford, Connecticut
    Visiting Information
: Hours and prices vary, visit their website to plan accordingly.

  6. Gravestone of the “Discoverer of Anesthesia”, Dr. Horace Wells
While Dr. Horace Wells was a dentist who pioneered the use of anesthesia, his story is quite tragic. With 12 successful procedures using anesthesia to reduce pain in his patients under his belt, he went to Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston to conduct a demonstration for medical students in 1884. During the demonstration, the anesthesia was improperly administered, resulting in the patient crying out in pain. This mishap sent Wells into a downward spiral which ultimately ended with him being detained in The Tombs Prison in Manhattan for attacking two women with sulfuric acid while in a chloroform-induced frenzy. Twelve days before he tragically ended his life by suicide, unbeknownst to him, the Parisian Medical Society had voted to honor him as the first to perform surgical operations without pain. His gravestone sits in the Cedar Hill Cemetery, an hour outside of Mystic.

    Location
: Cedar Hill Cemetery in Hartford, Connecticut
    Visiting Information
: The gates close at dusk. To view the gravestone, drive past the pond and turn left. The grave and memorial are on the right-hand side near a large tree.

  7. The Griswold Inn, the oldest continuously run tavern in the U.S.
Opening in 1776, The Griswold Inn has stood the test of time through British troops invading, Prohibition and the Great Depression. After the small town of Essex was outgunned by British troops in 1814, the troops occupied the Griswold Inn. Rather than being shut down, the Inn continued to stay open and to this day carries on a very British tradition of serving a hearty breakfast every Sunday. During Prohibition, the Griswold Inn was kept well-stocked by “rum runners” on the river. Despite being raided by the federal government numerous times, the Inn remained open. Today the Griswold Inn offers a taproom, wine bar and 22 rooms.

    Location
    : 36 Main St. Essex, Connecticut, 06426
    Visiting Information
: Open daily, visit their website to make reservations for lodging and historic dining.

  8. Hospital Rock
Farmington, Connecticut was once the site of the Todd-Wadsworth Smallpox Hospital. The hospital was used as a treatment and quarantine facility for nursing those with smallpox back to health before closing down in 1794. Hidden in the middle of woods near Rattlesnake Mountain are the only remnants of the hospital - a rock slab with 66 names etched into it. The rock can be found off the Metacomet Trail on a maze of unmarked trails.

    Location
    : Farmington, Connecticut
    Visiting Information
: The hidden rock can be difficult to find, and information is available in the Farmington room of the Farmington Library. The names on Hospital Rock can be difficult to see, so many bring flour with them to help bring the names into focus.

  9. PEZ Visiting Center
Orange, Connecticut is home to the largest public collection of PEZ memorabilia. The 4,000 square-foot space is jam-packed with everything PEZ-related, including the world’s largest PEZ dispenser.

    Location
: 35 Prindle Hill Rd. Orange, Connecticut
    Visiting Information
: Hours and pricing vary, visit their website to plan accordingly.

  10. Shade Swamp Sanctuary
Just off the U.S. Route 6 in Farmington, Connecticut sits the Shade Swamp Sanctuary, an abandoned Depression-era zoo. The 800-acre area started as a wildlife rehabilitation center in the 1930s and became a breeding center and zoo before closing in the 1960s. The area can be dangerous as there are concrete access hatches that are no longer covered, so take precaution when exploring the abandoned cages.

    Location
: Scott Swamp Road, Farmington, Connecticut
    Visiting Information
: Take precaution and use this map to find the Shade Swamp Sanctuary.

  11. Cushing Brain Collection
This historic collection in the Whitney Medical Library at Yale University showcases more than 400 abnormal and tumor-ridden brains. Dr. Harvey Cushing was an award-winning brain surgeon, Pulitzer Prize-winning author and World War I veteran. His collection was donated to Yale in 1939 after his death.

    Location
: Whitney Medical Library at Yale University at 333 Cedar Street, New Haven, Connecticut, 06511
    Visiting Information
: Bring your ID as you will have to give it to staff to enter the Collection.

  12. Abandoned Fairy Village
In Waterbury, Connecticut, alongside a major highway, sits an abandoned miniature village. Tiny houses are carved into the sides of stone cliffs along with a giant throne and fairy gardens. While it is not illegal to visit the Fairy Village, the town does not make it easy for fear of vandalism. You cannot access the area by car and there are parking restrictions on Old Waterbury Road.

Location: Old Waterbury Road, Waterbury, Connecticut
    Visiting Informatio
n: This attraction has no address and must be accessed on foot. At the end of Old Waterbury Road, there is an access road. You will need to walk along the service road until you see giant power lines and the highway in front of you. Once you pass under the giant power lines keep to the left going into the woods down a well-walked trail.

  13. Louis’ Lunch, the birthplace of the hamburger
While many restaurants have claimed to be the creator of the hamburger, Louis’ Lunch is the only one to have the distinction confirmed by the Library of Congress with the help of a member of the House of Representatives. Since opening in the late 1900s, they have continued to serve their burgers the same way, only offering cheese, tomato, or onions and no condiments.

    Location

DAY 1

If you’re anything like us, the best way to start the day is with a delicious cup of coffee and a walk through nature. Sift Bake Shop is right in the heart of downtown Mystic and offers a unique menu that has something for everyone. With house-made seasonal latte flavorings, smoothies, teas, and a wide assortment of savory and sweet treats, many of which are gluten-free and vegan, you will not be disappointed. Known for their interesting flavors, our favorites are the lavender oat milk latte, black sesame latte, and dirty chai. Share a croissant egg sandwich to give you a little energy for the hike, and make sure you grab some assorted French macarons and a chocolate hazelnut praline for later.

Once you’re fueled up, take a 5-minute drive to Beebe Pond Park. The beautiful woodlands are situated around a saltwater pond and offer 97 acres of moderate trails perfect for both kids and dogs. We recommend the Beebe Pond Park Loop, a 1.4-mile loop trail rated easy that wraps around the entire pond.

After your hike, it’s time to freshen up and get ready for the day. Now you’re ready for a real meal. Head back to downtown Mystic to Red 36 for beautiful outdoor dining and delicious seafood at the Seaport Marine. Watch the boats come and go into the marina as you snack on seafood ceviche, oysters, bang bang shrimp, and Korean pork lettuce wraps and sip on signature cocktails - our favorites are the Perro Salado and Cucumber Southside.

As your meal wraps up, it’s time to take in the sights, sounds, and shops of downtown Mystic on your way to the nation’s leading maritime museum. The Mystic Seaport Museum's mission is to inspire an enduring connection to the American maritime experience. The 19-acre museum offers a recreated New England coastal village, a working shipyard, and more than 500 historic watercrafts, including America’s oldest commercial ships still in existence.

On your way to the museum, do a little shopping at some of the best local shops in town. Mystic Knotwork offers nautical and knot themed bracelets, home decor, and more. Main Street Soap Emporium is a bath and body shop with wholesome, sustainable, and affordable products designed for the entire family. Explore an assortment of clothing, jewelry, and bags at Jooj Boutique
